The Cosmic Opera, what a show! With the main set going to world wide famous international DJ AXWELL (from the Swedish House Mafia DJ Trio Group). Supporting DJ acts were by DJ Thomas Gold; with his hit track ‘Marsch Marsch’ – and by the DJ Duo NO ID. The Supporting Dj’s Bio’s can be found on the bottom of this article, sourced from The Cosmic Oprea’s main website.
Most of the La2NYCTimes staff was on site for the Friday sold out (which sold out in a matter of minutes!)show, that was held in the Hammerstein Ballroom; only a minute or two away from the legendary performance by the Swedish house mafia in Madison Square Garden, back in December of 2011.
With more and more youths flocking to DJ events, it is now safe to say that DJ’s are the new Rock Stars of today – and the ticket sales of these dj events prove that statement. So why are these Dj events getting so much attention and so much people to attend the events? Well their are many reasons to why this is. For one, the technology for Dj’s has Drastically changed (for the better), as dj’s can now manipulate and do basically whatever they please to a track or any track samples (any any combo there-of) LIVE and on the Fly. Before, ‘back in the day’, doing any kind of sampling of a track and adding a certain effect – all while doing some-kind of looping effect to a track that is to be mixed in, would be simply impossible. Technology has made it easy and very essential to practically every dj on the planet to use some form of modern technology in their dj performances.
The physical appearance of the DJ show’s – with the lasers, extra loud bass pumping, fog & c02 machines blasting away into the crowd & Extra Jumbo TV monitors playing all over the events (showing the dj mixing the tracks together, or showing any sort of film that the DJ or event staff has picked out to show while the Dj set is playing) all comes together to become to formula for success at any Dj event.
Going back to talking about The Cosmic Opera at the Hammerstein Ballroom; here is some background info: Cosmic Opera is an intimate, extrasensory dance event series combining the cast and high-value production of a renaissance or opera spectacle with an over-the-top dance music concert. Set to take place in the beautiful Hammerstein Ballroom, Cosmic Opera will combine electronic music, art, and production in its highest form from across the centuries. Industry leaders in theater, event production, visual design, technology and music performance have teamed up to create a state-of-the-art, next-generation experience.
The Cosmic Opera series will open in New York City this winter, once a month, for three months in a row.
Electronic music and theatrical production will be rolled into one, with never-before seen laser and lighting elements integrated with dramatic, opera-themed activations spread throughout the venue. Audiences will never be hundreds of feet away from the experience. They will be part of it.
About Hammerstein Ballroom & New York City, NYC; NYNY: (the following information is taken from the cosmic opera main website)
There is currently no time period in the New York music calendar that is highly anticipated by DJs and fans. Every year, the people of Miami and the global electronic music world look forward to March for Winter Music Conference (WMC), Miami Music Week, Ultra, and Masquerade Motel. Every year in Austin, Texas fans can’t wait for the weeks that South by Southwest (SXSW) descends upon the city. In New York, one of the premiere entertainment destinations in the world, an epicenter of performance, history, and music culture — there is no time period for events like SXSW or WMC. This year, music lovers in NY will now have Cosmic Opera to look forward to and enjoy in late winter / spring.
As for the Hammerstein Ballroom; Fans, critics, managers and performers themselves, agree that the atmosphere and experience that the venue brings is sometimes overlooked, but crucial for an unforgettable event. Hammerstein is different than all other venues in NY. It’s one of the most well- respected, iconic music venues, and has been the home to symphonies, rock legends like Bob Dylan, pop stars like Alicia Keys, hip-hop moguls like Jay Z and some of the greatest performances history.
Hammerstein, a landmark opera house from 1906, is a performance venue offering endless production possibilities, an 80-foot ceiling, beautifully sculpted architecture and perfect acoustic construction. Given its history, cultural significance and design, the venue is the inspiration and the perfect home for an event of this proportion.
So WHY did this event take place, and how you ask? (the following information is taken from the cosmic opera main website)
WHY?
[Well,] Dance music is different from all other musical genres because inherently it is participatory. We don’t just listen – we dance. It is a revolutionary art form, tied to revolutionary technologies, and to the revolutionary wave of communication. To go with it, New York will receive a new brand of events.
HOW
Dance music is founded on collaboration, so is Cosmic Opera. The team collaborating to build Cosmic Opera is at the top of their respective industries, with a few scientists and theatrical directors added to the mix.
From the lasers, being custom built using never-before-seen lighting systems by the team that installed the lasers on the Pyramids of Egypt, to the video production team that put together films like “Requiem for a Dream” and TV shows like “The Soprano’s” and “Sex and The City.” The team also includes a Production Manager who oversees The World Science Festival and Lincoln Center Special Events. Cosmic Opera’s Visual Director has been behind diverse infamous performances ranging from Diana Ross, to Lady Gaga, to Pavarotti at MSG, and cutting edge and groundbreaking nightclubs such as the 8300 person venue “Ageha” in Tokyo and the notorious but intimate after-hours theater, “The Box.” The High-Tech Director, is an aerospace engineer who initially design weapons for the Department of Defense, now taking his knowledge for a more creative outlet. And finally Cosmic Opera’s Theatrical Director from The Nerve Tank, named “One to Watch” in 2011, and named among NYTheater’s “People of the Year” in 2012, will be crafting custom sets, story-boarded theatrical showcases, and adding theatrical performers / opera performers to add to the experience. This team has come together for a challenge. To change everything you think you know about events, and what’s possible.
Tune in for Act 2!

Supporting Acts for the Cosmic Opera (both dates of; Febuary 24th & the 25th 2012)- DJ’s (taken from The Cosmic Opera’s Main website):
Deniz Koyu; Supporting Act at The Cosmic Opera, Act One(1) – Thursday Febuary 23rd, 2012. Info:

Deniz Koyu; The Cosmic Opera Act One (1) Supporting Act DJ, Thursday February 23rd.
Deniz Koyu has without doubt proven to be one of the most promising talents to watch out for in 2011. His course to become a musician was set at the tender age of five when he began to learn the piano. It didn’t take long until he discovered his enthusiasm for synthesizers and drums, getting inspiration from artists such as Depeche Mode, Daft Punk, Kraftwerk or Cassius. It is no surprise he followed suit, spending his pocket money on all the second-hand synths and drum machines he could find. Through his teenage years, Deniz spent his days DJing and editing his favourite tracks using small tape recorders and sampling what he could.
In 2011 Deniz’ single releases “Tung” and “Hertz” on Flamingo Recordings and his remixes for James Blunt’s “Dangerous” and Kaskade’s “Turn It Down” evolved into huge house anthems at clubs and festivals around the globe, being played over and over by Tiesto, Swedish House Mafia, Fedde Le Grand, Avicii, Alesso, Erick Morillo, David Guetta, Calvin Harris, you name it.
Fedde Le Grand voted Deniz “Breakthrough DJ/Producer 2011″, Sebastian Ingrosso called him “big time talent”, and Axwell replied to the question of a Swedish journalist if he had personal favourites among young DJs: “Deniz Koyu. He makes damn cool music at the moment.”
So stay tuned and watch out for more secret weapons to come from Deniz Koyu, as this has only just begun.

Constantly finding new ways to enthuse and arouse their audiences, that is what NO_ID stands for and where these two guys put their faith in. Firm believers in the element of surprise, they let the music speak for itself as they play. Projects of NO_ID have been released on Cr2 Records, Armada Music, Ultra Records, Spinnin’ Records, Diffused Music and others. As a DJ, quite simply, Thomas Gold is known for having amongst the most impeccable programming and mixing skills in the business.
When asked by DJ Mag to name their upcoming DJ/producer of 2011, Swedish House Mafia, Axwell, Sander van Doorn, Cosmic Gate (and more) had one name in common – Thomas Gold. As a producer, Thomas Gold focuses on quality over quantity. 2010’s smashes “AGORa” [Size], “Work That” / “Kananga” [Toolroom], “The Button” [Toolroom], ”Marsch Marsch” [Toolroom], “Areena” (w/ David Tort and David Gausa), Thomas Gold & Alex Kenji “What´s Up” [Spinnin’] and Fatboy Slim vs Thomas Gold “Star69” [Skint], set the stage for a massive 2011. Thomas Gold’s collaboration with Dirty South, “Alive (feat. Kate Elsworth),” was named essential new tune by BBC Radio 1 on July 8, shot to number two on the Beatport charts and became one of the summer’s true festival anthems. Thomas returned in October with a massive rework of “Marsch Marsch” for inclusion on the 2011 Toolroom Amsterdam Dance Event Compilation.
In 2009 Thomas remixed Delerium’s classic “Silence” and it was named “Best Progressive House Track Of 2009” by Beatport. Then, in 2010, Thomas Gold remixed Moguai “We Want Your Soul” for Size Records and it was described by Tiësto as a “classic.” These proved to be just the tip of the iceberg as his remixing reached another level in 2011. In January, Axtone released “Hard Rock Sofa & St Brothers ‘Blow Up’ (Thomas Gold vs Axwell Remix)” which promptly rocketed up to number three on the Beatport charts. In March, Toolroom released Jay C & Felix Baumgartner “Souk (Thomas Gold Remix);” In May, Interscope released Lady GaGa “Judas (Thomas Gold Remix);” and on July 4th XL Recordings dropped Adele “Set Fire To The Rain (Thomas Gold Remix).” Thomas’ remix of “Set Fire To The Rain” which now has over 10 million plays on YouTube. Thomas rounded out his 2011 remix work with Sander van Doorn ‘Reach Out’ (Thomas Gold Remix) for Doorn Records.
As a DJ, Thomas Gold played all the right places in 2011. The impressive list includes coveted spots on Swedish House Mafia’s legendary Masquerade Motel Miami, EDC Las Vegas @ Swedish House Mafia (main) stage, Size Matters @ Governor’s Island, NYC, Tomorrowland main stage, Pacha Ibiza alongside Swedish House Mafia, Creamfields UK main stage and SHM stage, Escape From Wonderland Halloween Size Matters Stage, Sankeys Club, Manchester, Space Miami (headline), Pacha NYC (headline) and Ministry Of Sound (headline), among others.
Things to look out for from Thomas Gold in 2012 include Henrik B “Leave A Light On (Thomas Gold Remix)” [out in winter/early spring on Axtone]; Dirty South & Thomas Gold “Eyes Wide Open” [late January 2012 on Phazing], and finally, the much anticipated release of Thomas Gold “Sing2Me” [spring 2012 on Axtone]. “Sing2Me” was originally premiered by Swedish House Mafia during their September 16 takeover of BBC Radio 1, so this is a long time coming!
